Our History
Charley Bastian started AMA in 1980. He was working full time as a mechanic, but saw that there was a need for a new type of business.Car stereo was getting hot and there was no one in town to install it.  Since Charley’s specialty was automotive electronics, the move into car stereo
and other automotive electronics was a natural. When American of Marquette opened their doors Charley was tapped to do their installation work, a relationship that continues to this day. In June of 1983 Marty Martello moved to Marquette as the new Electronics Manager for American. He was pleased with the work that Charley was doing for him and they became good friends.  Charley moved his business to its current location on Wright Street in 1984.  A new larger building was built in 1989.  In 1993 the business had grown to the point that it could no longer be a one-man operation.  Charley and Marty formed their partnership in August of ’93 and the rest, as they say, is history.  The business has steadily grown over the years.  AMA has continually added new product lines and technologies as they became available.  Cruise control, auto alarms, remote starters, GPS, video systems, cellular phones and more have all become part of the business.  AMA installed the first remote starters in the U.P. and has installed more than any other dealer in the area.
Thousands of satisfied customers keep returning to make AMA the
longest-lived automotive accessories dealer in the U.P.

While neither Charley or Marty are native to the U.P., both have deep roots here and ties to many aspects of the community.  Charley spent lots of time in the U.P. as a kid---he has family in the Copper Country.  Marty came here on his (first) honeymoon in 1979 and immediately tried to figure out how he could make a living here.  Charley came to live in the U.P. as an NMU student studying secondary education  with an automotive & electronics minor and after never left.  AMA is deeply involved in the community.  AMA is a member of the Lake Superior Community Partnership, the Marquette Township Business Association, is a multi-time sponsor of the Marquette Blues Festival, supports Marquette Senior High School sports, U.P. Whitetails, Ducks Unlimited, NMU Athletics, The Peninsula Arts Appreciation Council, Hiawatha Music Festival and many other fine organizations. Marty is a member of  N.M.U.'s First Nighters Club and is deeply involvedwith local theater. AMA works hard to support other local businesses and encourages everyone to shop locally.
